Saturday the 16th of November 2024, will go down in the history of Hoedspruit as the night the Hoedspruit Private Hospital was officially opened by the Premier of Limpopo, Dr Pophi Ramathuba. Accompanied by her entourage which included the MEC of the Department of Health Ms Dieketseng Mashego, local traditional leaders Kgoshi Chiloane and Matladi, Executive Mayors of the Mopani District Municipality, the Mayor of the Maruleng Municipality, Councillor Tsheko Musolwa, and the Mayor of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality.
The ‘safari theme’ for the opening was well interpreted by the huge contingent of guests that included the VIP’s, management team, funders and investors, the practitioners, nurses and staff, and a good representation of locals.
In a significant leap for healthcare in Limpopo, the Hoedspruit Private Hospital is set to become a cornerstone for medical services in the region, responding to both the needs of local communities and international visitors. The hospital, which will offer world-class care in one of the province’s, indeed one of South Africa’s most rapidly developing areas, is poised to transform the landscape of healthcare in this rural region.
The journey to the realization of this state-of-the-art healthcare facility began six years ago, when a group of local residents, including three key figures – Dr Pieter Scholtz, Mr Jaco Leicester, and Carien Taute – came together with the vision of establishing a private healthcare facility in the heart of Hoedspruit. Recognizing the region’s growing population and the increasing demand for quality healthcare services, the trio embarked on securing the necessary land to make their vision a reality.
With the assistance of Urban Econ, a research consultancy, the team was able to assess the healthcare needs of the region. The findings were compelling: within a 75-kilometer radius of Hoedspruit, approximately 120 000 people across 29 500 households had access to medical aid and stood to benefit from the new hospital. This figure is expected to rise significantly in the coming years, with projections estimating 163 500 people across 38 000 households by 2039.
The approval for the project came on October 30th, 2019, when the Department of Health gave the green light to proceed with the planning, construction, and operation of a 50-bed private hospital, which would include four ICU beds and four operating theatres. The plans were formally submitted and approved in January 2021, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought a long, unexpected delay, forcing the project to be put on hold.
However, the team’s determination remained unwavering. In August 2022, a partnership was forged with Johannesburg Surgical Hospital, providing the necessary resources and expertise to continue the development of the Hoedspruit Private Hospital under their management. With the backing of the local community, Investec Bank, and several large investors, the project reached financial closure and began to take shape.
Critical milestones followed, including the approval of the site development plan and building plans, largely due to the support of the local government, led by the Mayor of the Maruleng Municipality Councillor Tsheko Musolwa, and the town planning department. Construction finally commenced on June 7th, 2023, when the site was handed over to the building contractor. This momentous occasion was marked by a ceremonial sod-turning event officiated by Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, then MEC of the Limpopo Department of Health, and the now Premier of Limpopo.
The hospital is designed with a focus on high-quality care, patient safety, and comfort. The facility’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and cutting-edge equipment reflect a commitment to providing world-class medical services to both the local population and international visitors to the region.
As part of its development, the hospital received approval to expand its original 50-bed license to 72 beds, making it a fully-fledged facility capable of meeting the diverse healthcare needs of the community.
The expanded facility will include a maternity ward and a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to mother and child healthcare. This addition highlights the hospital’s response to the recommendations of the then MEC, Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, and underscores co-operation, and the importance of comprehensive healthcare services in rural communities.
Comprehensive Healthcare for the Region
Hoedspruit Private Hospital promises to deliver a broad range of medical services, all under one roof. The hospital’s design reflects a patient-centred approach, with modern infrastructure, advanced diagnostic equipment, and a wide range of specialties. These include a 26-bed general medical ward, a 15-bed surgical ward, and a 12-bed day ward for elective surgeries. Additionally, the hospital boasts four state-of-the-art operating theatres, two of which are equipped with advanced airflow systems to ensure clean air circulation during surgeries. The hospital’s theatre complex also features unique lighting that promotes a calming environment for both patients and staff.
The maternity ward will offer six dedicated beds and two delivery rooms, positioned close to the operating theatres for emergency Caesarean sections or high-risk births. The neonatal intensive care unit will feature four beds, equipped with cutting-edge technology to provide care for premature or critically ill newborns. For critically ill adults and children, the intensive care unit (ICU) will have five beds, equipped with advanced monitoring systems that allow for real-time patient data access, always ensuring expert care. One of the beds is in an isolated cubicle and can be used for children, if the need arises.
In addition to its specialized wards, the hospital will offer a full range of emergency services through its well-equipped emergency room, capable of handling trauma, cardiac emergencies, infections, and other critical conditions. The emergency department will also serve as a gateway to more intensive care, should patients need to transition to the ICU or theatre for surgery.
One of the key features of the hospital will be its in-house pharmacy, which will provide medications for both inpatients and outpatients. The hospital will also feature Ampath and Lancet laboratories, offering a wide range of diagnostic services, ensuring that patients have access to timely and accurate test results
Expert Medical Team
The hospital’s success will depend on the skilled and experienced medical professionals who will staff the facility. A team of permanent specialists will provide continuity of care across all departments. These include general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, and emergency care.
The general surgery department will be equipped to handle both elective and emergency surgeries, while internal medicine specialists will manage chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. The maternity ward will be staffed by a full-time obstetrician and gynaecologist, providing antenatal care, deliveries, and reproductive health services. A dedicated paediatrician will also be on hand to provide specialized care for children.
Emergency care will be another vital aspect of the hospital’s operations, with a full-time emergency physician on call 24/7 to respond to trauma, cardiac emergencies, and other critical conditions.
Additionally, a team of visiting specialists will provide their expertise on a sessional basis, further expanding the range of services offered and available to patients. These specialties will include orthopaedics, urology, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), maxillofacial and oral surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as a pain clinic for people suffering from chronic pain.

Approvals and Target Date
The Department of Health approved the facility on Wednesday 30th October 2024. Management now awaits the physical issuing of the license which is required for the application for a Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) inspection. Once that is completed, a practice number will be issued, after which the hospital can register with the medical aids and be fully operational. The target date – December 2024 – all within a year and a half of sod turning!
