Fortune Khoza, of Acorn to Oaks, changed schools and took a brave step when he moved away from home to prepare for the biggest year of his schooling career.
His dedication paid off. He was among the top 33, out of almost 800 000, matriculants in the country who were honoured by the department of basic education at a breakfast event with Minister Angie Motshekga.
Fortune moved to Acorn to Oaks as he believed it would give him better opportunities, but the school was quite a distance from his home. He rented a one-room house which he shared with another class mate. During this time he studied, cooked and cleaned for himself.
The young man who got 97% for maths says: ‘I was not good in maths but I was good in other subjects. I went to get help from a guy called Harvey. He assisted me.’
He credits his teachers for his top marks: ‘My accounting teacher was a dedicated teacher,’ he explains. ‘He managed to finish the syllabus by February and from then on we were just going through previous exam papers.’ All his marks were above 80% with a full 100% for Physical Sciences.
Fortunate told Kruger2Canyon that he has been accepted to study Actuarial Science at Wit’s university. When asked what motivated him to study this, he was quick to explain that he sees so much money spent recklessly in the community he lives in that he would like to be qualified in a field where he can bring his knowledge and advice to his roots.
