The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued ongoing warnings related to a low-pressure system over southern Mozambique, which is expected to continue affecting north-eastern South Africa over the coming days.
Forecasts indicate that the Lowveld of Mpumalanga, the Limpopo Valley, and eastern parts of Limpopo will experience persistent rainfall and thunderstorms, beginning from last Sunday evening and potentially continuing through mid-week and beyond. Significant rainfall accumulations are expected across the region.
The following impacts are likely:
- Flooding of roads and settlements (formal and informal)
- Mudslides, rockfalls and soil erosion, particularly along the escarpment
- Dangerous conditions near rivers and streams due to fast-flowing water
- Traffic disruption and road closures
- Damage to low-lying roads, bridges and vulnerable structures
- Temporary isolation of communities surrounded by rivers or drainage lines
SAWS has issued Orange Level 9 and Orange Level 6 warnings for parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, indicating a high to severe risk of flooding, infrastructure damage, loss of livestock and potential danger to life. A Yellow Level 2 warning remains in place for surrounding areas where localised flooding is possible.
Residents are urged to:
- Avoid rivers, spruits and flooded roads
- Move vehicles, livestock and valuables to higher ground
- Keep children away from drainage lines
- Do NOT drive through flowing water
- Do NOT block natural water flow paths
- Remain alert, even after rainfall subsides, as flooding often occurs later due to upstream runoff
Preparedness and early action save lives. Stay alert. Stay safe.
