South Africa is synonymous with the “braai”, and with various cuts of meats marinaded and spiced and lovingly turned over hot coals. But what if you are not a big meat eater, what are you going to eat at your next braai?
his month I was lucky enough to have been able to be sample the fine cuisine at the Stoned Olive. I immediately liked its kind of ‘happy-go-lucky’ ambience – all that was missing in was a beach and the reggae music!
Now back in ‘the Hoed’, it’s back to work on getting to know and sample the numerous dining offerings around town. We have gone to, and experienced Sleepers and Anne’s Cotton Club, so let’s see what the new year has in store for us.
I was walking along to the Hoedspruit Café minding my own business and trolling my WhatsApp when I suddenly had to take evasive action to stop walking into a table. At the table was a man fondly admiring a knife – not a penknife, not a run-of-the-mill piece of cutlery – a BIG knife. It looked like it had been painstakingly forged by some medieval craftsman – it was a beautiful piece of work, in fact a piece of art.
The Mafunyane 4×4 Eco-Trail is a four-day, three-night guided adventure trail along the north-western section of Kruger National Park, between Phalaborwa gate and Punda Maria.

Lizelle is the owner of Paintsmiths Hoedspruit. I was certainly drawn in by her enthusiasm and demeanour – although I do think that she was somewhat surprised, when I decided, off-the-cuff, that she should be my next ‘Spotlight Time” victim! I did catch her off guard, but she soon warmed to the ‘challenge’.
I went to sample the delightful gourmet spread from Anne’s Cotton Club (on the R40), about 5 minutes out of town. The menu was happily not exhaustive, which seems to have added to the personal attention to, and quality of, the dishes that were served. And a good selection of dishes there was.
So many people have said this to me, so here we are. Every month I will share one of my favourite dishes which will hopefully inspire you to eat more veggie based food.
The lowveld has some very special trees, and one of the most impressive is the Baobab. You cannot miss the opportunity to dig deeper and learn more about these incredible, magnificent, behemoth creatures.
