A farmer with a heart for his community
Bennedicter Mhlongo is a former nurse who worked for Department of Health for more than five years. The aspiring farmer eventually resigned to start his own company with his wife Veronica, trading as Benica Fruits and Veggies since 2013. Benica is derived from Bennedicter’s and Veronica’s combined names.
The couple have a 10-hectare farm in Arthurseat, west of Acornhoek. They produce a variety of vegetables which they supply to the nearby communities, shops and street vendors. Amongst others they are proud suppliers to Spar, SuperSpar, Roots, Makhoma Butcheries and Apple Box.
The Benicas are well known for their generous donations of vegetable packs to orphanages, disability centres, churches and crèches.
Despite extreme challenges such as a lack of water, poor irrigation systems and fencing, the Benica group still manages to make a success and feed needy communities. Bennedicter believes that nobody should go to bed with an empty stomach while we all can make use of our back gardens. His dream is to adopt more than one orphanage and provide free farming lessons to the vulnerable children with the little knowledge he has.
‘Growing up with my grandmother after I lost my parents has helped me a lot, because she taught me about organic farming and sharing of produce,’ says a humble Bennedicter
You will find their retail shop in Acornhoek opposite the Acornhoek Library. Currently Benica Fruits and Veggies has eight permanent workers, three bakkies, one half truck and an Avanza which they use for deliveries and supplies.
The couple intend to make the most of 2020 and kicked off January with a donation of 30 veggie packs to local charities.
Any help on the farm, or donations of fencing materials and JoJo tanks, or assistance with installation of a borehole, would go a long way towards assisting Benica to become more efficient.
